His name was never Steamboat Willie. "Steamboat Willie" was the third Mickey Mouse cartoon, as well as the name of Mickey's steamboat in the cartoon. The only name Mickey had before it was Mickey was the one Walt Disney had come up with originally: Mortimer Mouse.

No! Surprised? Lots of people think Steamboat Willie was Mickey's first appearance, in fact it was Plane Crazy (first released on May 15, 1928). It was an animated cartoon, and the first Mickey Mouse cartoon to be released.
