No one knows who were the first European settlers to reach New Hampshire. But-wide scale exploration of the area began in the 1600's. In 1603, Martin Pring of England sailed a trading ship up the Piscataqua River. Pring and his crew may have landed in Portsmouth. The French explorer Samuel de Champlain landed on the New Hampshire coast in 1605. John Smith reached the Isles of Shoals. He renamed them, "Smith's Islands."

In 1623, Thompson and his followers settled at Odiorne's Point (now part of Rye). Edward Hilton settled Hilton's Point (now Dover) in the 1620's. Some historians believe these settlements began at the same time. Other's believe Hilton's came later.
