Johnson became president when Kennedy was assassinated. He finished out JFK's term and kept JFK's policies pretty much in tact. Vietnam, was there, but no really big problem yet. The 'space race' was a big thing.

Johnson ran for president and was elected in 1964, took office Jan 1965. Johnson started a policy of attempting to reduce poverty in the country. Also there was key legislation for civil rights enacted. Vietnam was expanding. More troops were sent in to bolster the South Vietnamese government. Somewhere near 250,000 troops were sent to Vietnam. The US govt expanded the war to include battles in Cambodia and Laos. An incident occurred in the Gulf of Tonkin between some of our naval ships and the North Vietnamese. Johnson used this to push for large bombing strikes in North Vietnam. The land war (our troops against theirs) was never fought in North Vietnam by american forces. The US bombed North Vietnam, North Vietnam sent troops to South Vietnam to fight in the ground war.

The war became very unpopular with some american citizens. There were protests on many college campuses against the war. Some blacks became dissillusioned thinking that the draft was unfair since more affluent americans went to college and were not drafted and sent to the war. Mainly because of the opposition to the war was growing, LBJ decided not to run for reelection as president. Near the end of his term M. L. King was assassinated, ans so was Robert Kennedy (while campaining for the presidency). There were riots in several cities with large black populations after King's death.

The space race was continuing with JFK's goal of putting a man on the moon before the end of the decade. This was achieved about 5 months after LBJ left office. Nixon had been elected, and took office in Jan 1969.

There were still antiwar protests occurring on college campuses. At kent State University in the spring of 1970, National Guard Troops shot several students, killing 4 of them. Some of the students were not protesting, just crossing campus to get to class. The war continued for at least 4 more years after Nixon took office, promising to 'wind the war down'.
