The Noble Experiment took effect on a national level on 16 January 1920. It had variations of effect at State and local levels much earlier in history:
Prohibition started as a result of the government needing a cause to blame for the violence in the country. As a result the government outlawed alcohol in an attempt to do so; however, this only increased the violence with organized crime trying to sell alcohol.
Prohibition which was very controversial began in the United States on January 17, 1920. This lasted until 1933 when it was overturned.

Attitudes towards Prohibition did change at the start of the period of Prohibition many people were positive towards the idea of Prohibition with them believing that it would lead to a "Purer" American society however by the end of the Prohibition era most people wanted the law to be abolished with most believing that it had been a failure which had encouraged ordinary American citizens to become criminals So overall attitudes towards the idea of probhition did change from the period of 1915-33
