By most accounts, the early church did not have holidays, since the general belief was that Jesus would be returning within the lifetime of the early believers, so rituals and holidays were not necessary. But when Jesus did not return, the church gradually established ceremonies, rituals, and holidays to unite believers and allow them to express their faith. Good Friday does not seem to have been observed until about the year 350 or so, but we do not have any exact dates for the very first time.
