The first possible patent connected to mechanical sewing was a 1755 British patent issued to German, Charles Weisenthal. Weisenthal was issued a patent for a needle that was d…esigned for a machine, however, the patent did not describe the rest of the machine if one existed. But.. An English inventor and cabinet maker, Thomas Saint was issued the first patent for a complete machine for sewing in 1790.

Englishman Thomas Saint in 1790 was the first sewing machine made. Woodcut of the first patented lockstitch sewing machine, invented by Elias Howe in 1845 and patented in… 1846. The machine was not successful commercially. Isaac Singer improved it and manufactured the first commercially successful machine in 1850. Howe sued Singer for patent infringement and won in 1854, and subsequently earned about 2 million dollars in royalties for his invention. Alterations: removed the caption, which read: "The first Howe sewing machine".

KENMORE is just a Brand name used by Sears. They CONTRACT with other companies to manufacture for them.( Just like Craftsman tools!) Most are either White or Janome machines.

It was 1790 and the textile industry was booming, cotton was plentiful thanks to the invention of the cotton gin, the spinning jenny allowed mass production of yarn coupled wi…th the power loom. With all this extra cloth and no possible way to sew with out the labor intensive chore of sewing by hand what were we to do? Elias Howe had an idea, what if there was a machine up the process of sewing stitch after stitch, and so came along the invention of the sewing machine. This was later advanced to a reliable machine by the Inventor Elias Howe.
