You must be 17 years of age and weigh at least 110 pounds. Checks on pregnancy, iron levels and sexual habits are also done. They will check on health conditions, such as AIDS, STDs and current medications. Pulse, blood pressure and body temperature are also checked.
I am donating my blood at least three times a year and the blood tests performed are for: Chagas disease (T. cruzi), Hepatitis B virus (HBV), Hepatitis C virus (HCV 3.0), Human Immunodeficiency viruses, Types 1 and 2 (HIV 1,2), Human T-Lymphotropic virus (HTLV-I/II), Syphilis (Treponema pallidum) and West Nile virus (WNV)

In most cases, blood type of the recipient AND donor are checked. In a case of extreme emergency, the recipient blood type may not be checked and they will receive group O NEG unmatched red cell transfusion.
There are several types of blood groups. When receiving a blood transfusion a sample is taken and sent to the lab. It needs to be matched to blood that has the same antibodies and rh factor in order for it to be transfused to a patient. There are times that even with all the necessary test causes a reaction to the person receiving blood.
If the blood type of the donor is different from the receivers blood type, the blood type of the revive can attack the different type of blood
If it is the wrong type, the red blood cells of the person clump together . Clots form in the blood vessels, and the person dies.

If you receive a blood transfusion, you are under no obligation to "return" (or "donate") any blood to back the blood bank. This is true both before and after receiving a blood transfusion - i.e you do not have to have donated blood previously, before you can have a transfusion. (At least, this is how it works in the UK). Nice to know, really.
Antamine is given 30 minutes before a blood transfusion. This is to assess for allergic reactions.
blood transfusion :)
Only if it is legal where you are.
It is possible that the availability of artificial blood would make severe blood shortages a thing of the past. Mass trauma events would pose less of a strain on the blood supply.
A Group and Screen is taken pre transfusion, this is to check the blood group to ensure the patient recieves the correct blood group.
The following tests are performed before the blood transfusion. 1. Hepatitus B 2. Hepatitus C 3. HIV 4. Treponima pallaidum (Symphillus) 5. Malarial Parasite 6. Creutz feldt Jacob disease or Mad cow disease
