The cold water molicules (or ice molicules) abosorb the heat of the drink and begin to move faster. however the drink is not warm enough for the drink to melt the ice cubes completely. the over all effect is that all of the molicules in the drink slow down thus becoming colder.
Drink, get in shadows
Ice is cool because they particles are slowing down, causing the to give off less kinetic energy, and therefore less heat

Because during the summer it's hot out and they drink water to cool them off. During the winter it's cold so instead of drinking cold water to cool them off, they drink a hot beverage to warm them up. :)
1). The old hot water bottle would not work as well as it does. The rubber bag would cool off long before your bedsheets or your legs got warmed up.2). The ice in your drink would be melted and gone long before the drink cooled down.
Soak it in ice/dunk it in ice to cool it off every now and then.
Ice is a dehydration agent if used in water when the body is trying to cool off
