The first ever polio vaccine was developed by Dr Jonas Salk at the University of Pittsburgh in the early 1950s. It was a killed vaccine that was tested in clinical trials in 1954 and ultimately gained government approval by 1955 for use on the common public. There is also another polio vaccine that was developed by Dr Albert Sabin. This vaccine was a live version of the polio virus and is taken orally. Two versions were independently invented.

  1. Salk killed virus vaccine, had to be injected.
  2. Sabin live attenuated virus vaccine, usually given as a drop of liquid on a sugar cube.

I received both in early grade school.

In both the virus was grown then treated to eiter kill it (Salk) or make it weaker and slower to reproduce (Sabin). The Sabin was more effective but had a small risk of causing actual cases of polio, it can no longer be used in the US as this risk is now larger than that of catching wild polio here.
