Semiconductors are used to make diodes (WHICH CAN BE USED AS RECTIFIERS i.e. a device used to convert A.C. to D.C. , voltage stabilizers as in zener diode, in LED,s etc) semiconductors are also used to make Transformers which have variety of other uses

Which group of the periodic table of elements is used to make semiconductors?

Group 14 elements, mainly silicon or germanium are semiconductors. If they are dopped with group 13 elements such as gallium / indium or with group 15 elements such as arsenic / antimony, then the conducting ability increases.

Why the compound semiconductors are not suitable for making transistors and ICs?

Compound semiconductors have very low lifetime of charge carriers and hence they are not used for making Transistors and ICs.Rather it is used for making LEDs and LASER diodes. So the compound semiconductors are called photo-diodes. -M.R

Why do we mostly use indirect semiconductors?

The indirect band gap semiconductors like silicon and germanium are mostly used because they are elemental, plentiful, and easier to process than the direct band gap semiconductors which are alloys or compounds.
