According to Joseph Smith's own record:

"... by the wisdom of God, they remained safe in my hands, until I had accomplished by them what was required at my hand. When, according to arrangements, the messenger called for them, I delivered them up to him; and he has them in his charge until this day, being the second day of May, one thousand eight hundred and thirty-eight."

This is recorded in his personal history and also in the Introduction of the Book of Mormon.

Therefore, the plates have been in the charge of the Angel Moroni since the Book of Mormon was published in 1830. Where exactly they are is unknown and not a significant doctrine within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church). Most speculate that they were taken up into heaven.

Who found the plates that made up the Book of Mormons?

My response is an attempt to avoid biggoted judgment and supply the answer according to my understanding of the Mormon Book's history. The plates of the Book of Mormon were a collection of books of history and religious teachings of various prophets and leaders from ancient America. The plates were compiled and abridged by the Prophet Mormon around 1,400 years ago and buried in a hill side in what is now known as upstate New York. The intention of these records was to be a second testament that Jesus is the Christ to support the collection of teachings that were compiled in to what we now call the Holy Bible. These plates were discovered and translated by a young farm boy living in the area named Joseph Smith. Several people wrote a testimonial witness to seeing and feeling the plates. According to Joseph Smith the plates were given to an Angel of God to be stored after translation. As with most religious text, faith is required when deciding whether the reader of book accepts it as the word of God or just an incredibley powerful spiritual story written by a man. Improved answer - In regards to the answer posted first (above), the golden plates were not 'discovered' by Joseph Smith. Joseph Smith, when he was 21 years old, was told by an angel where the golden plates were located.

Who was rev Solomon Spalding born 1771 died in 1809 and how is he related to the book of Mormon?

Solomon Spalding wrote a document now called the "Spalding Manuscript". Critics claim that Joseph Smith did not actually translate ancient plates into the Book of Mormon, but rather wrote the Book of Mormon himself and based it on the Spalding Manuscript. This claim is largely denied by scholars, both Mormon and non-Mormon, because of the testimonies of several people who saw or handled the ancient plates, and because modern writing evaluation technology has concluded that the Book of Mormon could not have been written by a single man (especially one with next to no literary edcuation, as Joseph Smith had).

What book did Joseph smith decipher and write?

You are probably thinking of the Book of Mormon. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (commonly called "Mormons") believe that Joseph Smith was lead to the place where metal plates were buried near his home by an angel. These plates were translated by the power of God and became the Book of Mormon. Later, Joseph Smith also translated some Egyptian papyri into what is now known as the Book of Abraham in the Pearl of Great Price. You can read the Book of Mormon, the Book of Abraham, and other Mormon scripture for free online by going to http://scriptures.lds.org.

Where is this ancient record that Joseph smith found?

The ancient record that was translated by Joseph Smith is now published as the Book of Mormon. He also translated a much smaller and lesser-known ancient record that is published among Mormon scripture in the Pearl of Great Price as the Book of Abraham. The actual metal plates which he translated into the Book of Mormon were taken into heaven by the angel Moroni, which lead him to them in the first place.

Who began the book of Mormon?

Where did Joseph smith find the plates?

Joseph Smith was lead to the hill near his home by the angel Moroni, who showed him where the plates were buried. The hill did not have a name at the time. Mormons call the hill Cumorah, because the Book of Mormon says that the plates were buried by Moroni in the hill Cumorah. Non-Mormons often call the hill "Mormon Hill" or "Gold Bible Hill".
