15 year olds have more options than children under 14 do, but the big jump occurs at 16 (and at 18 you can do nearly anything).

One thing to note is that it's legal for more employers to hire you. That doesn't mean they WILL hire you. The restrictions on how many hours 15 year olds can work can be a pain for employers, and they may just pass on you rather than run the risk of falling afoul of the law. Still, if they're looking for part time work (or seasonal summer work), then you're a viable option; you can't work overtime, but other than that when school's not in session you're allowed to work up to 8 hours per day and 40 hours per week. When school is in session, though, that drops to 3 hours per school day (including Friday) and 18 hours per week, which is a lot more restrictive. Note that these restrictions apply based on the public school in your area even if you're home schooled or don't actually attend school at all.

You also can't work before 7 am or after 7 pm, except during the summer (June 1 through Labor Day) when you're allowed to work until 9 pm.

Okay. That said, you're legally permitted to work in:

  • Retail occupations
  • "Intellectual or creative" work: computer programming, teaching, tutoring, playing an instrument, etc.
  • Errands or delivery work by foot, bicycle, or public transportation
  • Clean-up or yard work that doesn't involve power tools (basically, if it has an engine or motor, you can't use it)
  • Work "in connection" with cars or trucks (pumping gasoline, washing, polishing... NOT driving, obviously)
  • Limited kitchen/food service work
  • Work with fruit or vegetables (washing, packing, weighing, pricing, stocking), as long as it doesn't involve a freezer or meat cooler
  • Loading or unloading (certain) objects at a worksite (again, you've got to steer clear of the power tools)
  • You MAY be allowed to work in certain manufacturing jobs (e.g. at a sawmill) if you meet certain requirements
  • You MAY be employed as a lifeguard under certain circumstances

Your best bet is probably retail, fast food (probably not actual cooking, but you're allowed to reheat things with a microwave; you're also allowed to clean up or work a register), or bussing tables/washing dishes.
