Minerals are elements and compounds.

The crystals that make up rocks are minerals. Minerals are found in ore, soil, and dissolved in water. All living organisms contain minerals.

Any non-organic rock is composed of minerals.

Minerals can be found everywhere, you may not even realize how close we come to facing minerals every day. your makeup contains minerals, batteries have the mineral nickel. your pencil contains graphite and clay, two other examples of minerals. Believe it or not your toothpaste contains florite, another common mineral.

Mining is one way of finding minerals, but minerals exist everywhere in nature, and you will find them in every rock and even in the food you eat. If you are interested in seeing spectacular minerals and mineral specimens, go to a natural history museum (like the Smithsonian, or if you are in NYC, the Museum of Natural History). You can also see and buy rocks, crystals, minerals and mineral specimens at a rock shop or even a metaphysical store (where you can actually touch them) or on the internet.
