Search the Wikipedia for "SI prefixes". Example: mega means a million; kilo means a thousand; so to convert from mega-something to kilo-something, you multiply by 1000 (which is a million divided by thousand). Or: kilo means a thousand, milli means 1/1000, so to convert from kilo to milli, you multiply by a million (since 1000 divided by 1/1000 is a million).

If what you want is to convert metric units to non-metric units, or vice versa (for example, light-years to meters), you might just look up the specific unit, for example in the Wikipedia - usually it lists equivalents in other units. You can also type something similar to the following in Google:

1 light-year in meters

And Google will show you the equivalent.

Everywhere except the U.S.

Answer:It might be more accurate to say everywhere except in US public education. Public schools spend more time teaching conversions to and from and between US Customary units than simply teaching students how to use metric.

In the US, virtually all scientific research and engineering is done using the SI (metric system). Beyond high school, all science is taught using SI units. Everything involving electricity is in SI units, as there are no alternatives. Medicine and pharmacology use metric units. Many US manufacturers switched from "US Customary" units to metric units 30 years ago. The computer and electronics industry is entirely metric. Automotive manufacturing uses metric parts exclusively, now. In sports, Track and Field events are all measured in metric units. Water and Carbonated Beverages are commonly sold in liter and half-liter sizes. Nutritional labels on food always give the quantities of nutrients in grams.

The only difference is that the mteric system is calculated by hundreds so it is easy to convert. ex: millimetter: .0001 centimeter:. 01 ,decimeter: .1 ,meter: 1, dekameter:10,hecto meter:100, kilometer:1000 I hope you got your answer

Mostly just tradition. People are used to the old system, so they don't want to change to unfamiliar metric, even though the conversions are easier.
