Replacing your serpentine belt for a 97 cavalier Somebody was helpful enough to post this at another site and I am loading it to a bunch of other sites so it can be found quickly. To do this, you need a 15mm wrench. I found that one that has a box side was helpful. The way to loosen the tension is by twisting the upper middle pulley clockwise. This allows you to pull the belt off of the alternator attachment. I left my wrench on the pulley, after easing the pulley back, the belt just comes off. Make sure to hook the bottom pulleys first (makes it easier) and the alternator one last, after loosening the tension again. I have a 2.2L with AC; so coming in from the 9 o
Open the hood and look. If it has a serpentine belt there is a tensioner.

How to put on belt
Remove the serpentine belt and remove the alternator. The belt tensioner bolts are under the alternator.
GOOYEAR BELTS HAVE A DIAGRAM ON THE BACK OF THERE PACKAGE Sometimes these diagrams can also be found under the hood of your car. In my 1990 cavalier this sticker was located in the area where the serpentine belt goes on.

To release the 1990 Cavalier serpentine tension, use a socket and a ratchet. Put the socket on the bolt heat in the middle of the pulley wheel, and pull to one side, and the belt will be loosened to be able to be removed.

You dont! The belt is self adjusting with the belt tensioner. Check the tensioner for failure or damage if your belt is loose good luck
