Auditions for reality television are as varied as the numbers of types of reality shows out there:
- Competition type shows generally feature national casting calls which are promoted in local media (TV, Newspapers, Online) - they travel to major cities and generally follow the same format from one audition to the next (think Survivor, American Idol)
- Lifestyle shows - These shows typically have a premis that has already been developed or sold to a network. If network gives go ahead then casting begins. Reality shows have a topic, housewives, pawnbrokers, motorcycle builders, etc. So you don't really audition, if it's a show about hot rod cars and your not involved in that business they won't be interested in you. That's the reality part of the show, the people in the show are what the show advertises, be it housewife, home flipper, etc.
In that case, the best thing to do is keep an eye on trade magazines, and internet message boards and clubs that relate to your specialty or hobby.
- Traditional casting call notices for general shows are posted on entertainment industry publications and websites, and on production company websites. for these auditions, try to get to know the production companies that are in the business and keep an eye on their announcements and news.
