these electromagnetic waves are classified in to different types depending on their wavelenth they are

• visible light
• ultraviolet light
• x rays
• gamma rays

The two main divisions are ionising radiation and non-ionising radiation.

Long wave radiation and radiation with wavelengths longer than at the top of the visible spectrum is non-ionising, which means that photons of the radiation are not energetic enough to break down moloecules. These include radio waves of all kinds, infra red and visible light. Living organisms can be damaged by non-ionising radiation only by the heat that can be produced when the radiation is too intense.

Starting with ultra-violet and shorter wavelengths, individual photons have enough energy to alter the structure of molecules. For example if an electron gets knocked off an atom the atom becomes ionised, so this type of radiation is described as ionising. When it is used for x-rays, precautions must be taken by the operators to avoid a too-high dosage because ionising radiation can produce cancer.
