First of all, "Laser" and "Ink" are two different printing technologies. LaserJet is HP's term referring to laser printers. Similarly, laser cartridges have many moving parts inside that are designed for one use so they should be replaced when you get a aftermarket cartridge. An easy way to tell for HP cartridges, for example, is the drum (cylindrical metal tube on the laser cartridge). HP drums are creamy green and all aftermarket drums are not - usually they are bright green or blue.
