When he was 12, his mother sent him to work at Warren's Blacking (shoepolish) Factory. When he left there a few months later, he returned to school; at 15, he worked as a law clerk, then a court reporter. During that time, he was submitting essays and sketches to newspapers and magazines. Once these began to be published, he quickly became famous and began writing full time.

Charles Dickens didn't work at a poor house. He worked at a blacking factory owned by Charles Lamert while his father was imprisoned at Marshalsea Debtor's Prison (a poor house). Charles' father, mother and four of his siblings lived at Marshalsea with John Dickens, while Charles continued to work at the blacking factory while living in a rented attic space a few miles away.
