Charles Goodyear used different venues in different cities to develop a better rubber. He is credited with developing the process called vulcanization of rubber in 1839. He was awarded a U.S. patent for the process in 1844. His breakthrough came about by accident, when he was showing off a new rubber he had developed. He was showing the new product to some customers in a general store located in Woburn, Massachusetts. As he waved the rubber in the air, a piece flew off an landed on a sizzling-hot potbellied stove. He peeled off a piece and after it cooled, he realized he had developed a more stable rubber that would not rot as easily as early forms had.
