A:Emperor Theodosius had made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire in 381 CE and shortly afterwards made the public worship of the pagan gods a crime punishable by death. Subsequent emperors, both in the east and the west, increased the ferocity of the persecution of pagans, until the entire populations of the Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire of the east were Christians.

The Roman Empire came to an end in 476 CE, by which time Romans knew nothing of Christianity's unsavoury past and simply accepted that the religion they inherited from their parents was true. Popularity simply meant that the people felt there was no acceptable alternative to Christianity.
