The first known outbreak occurred in June 1976 in Southern Sudan. The second was in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Zaire). The virus was then named Ebola after the Ebola River near Zaire.

Gabon- which is located on the West Coast of Central Africa. Occurred in Mékouka (in Gabon)and other gold-mining camps deep in the rain forest. Initially thought to be yellow fever; identified as Ebola hemorrhagic fever in 1995.
