The cause of Virginia Poe’s death was attributed to tuberculosis, also known as consumption, a common and deadly disease during the 19th century. This tragic event deeply impacted Edgar Allan Poe, influencing the themes of death and mourning in his later works.

The actual cause of his death is a mystery.

Medical science at that time was quite primitive.

Speculation includes, Alcoholism, cerebral inflammation, brain congestion, cholera, meningitis, rabies, epilepsy, syphilis, heart disease, and fever delirium

Another theory is "cooping." This is a practice where local thugs force people to vote several times so as to fraudulently get their candidates elected. Poe was found incoherent outside a saloon that had been used as a polling place in an election the day before. He was also found wearing clothes that were not his. Many times people dressed differently, cut off beards and mustaches to look different to poll workers in order to vote more than once. Some people were beaten or gotten drunk to persuade them to cooperate even if they did not want to.

It was reported in a newspaper obituary a few days after Poe's death that he died of "congestion of the brain." This was not a medical diagnosis of the cause of death and there is no death certificate. No one knows if it was alcoholism related although many people simply assumed that. The fact is no one knows what Poe died from.

There is some strong evidence that Poe's death was not caused by the popular belief that it was alcohol, but rather rabies. See the Related Links for some articles on it.

Additional comment:

Dr. Benitez's theory was first raised in 1996 and has been debunked according to the Edgar Allan Poe Society of Baltimore because it relies on incorrect data. A major part of Dr. Benitez's theory relies on a statement made by Charles Scarlett, Jr after reading an account of Poe's death by Dr. John Moran that Poe was unable to drink water except with great difficulty. Dr. Benitez assumes this to be hydrophobia, a fear of water common in rabies cases.

The trouble is that Dr. Moran later stated that Poe was able to drink half a glass of water with no difficulty. This refutes the hydrophobia theory, which in turn refutes the rabies theory.

See the third Related Link.

His death has remained a mystery, so no one can actually say what killed him.

His exact cause of death is not known for certain, however some of the published poisoning possibilities include alcohol poisoning by excessive consumption of alcohol, a toxic disorder, or carbon monoxide poisoning.
