George Washington was president for two terms from 1789 to 1797. During his first term the government met in New York City and as president he rented a house there. During his second term the government met in Philadelphia and also rented a house there.

His permanent home is considered Mount Vernon, VA, which is 16 miles south of Washington DC.

When he was not engaged in military missions or serving as president, he lived in Virginia , at first at his father's estate near Fredericksburg, VA and later at the estate he inherited from his brother , not very far from present-day Washington, DC.
