The history of Italy probably begins about 5-6 thousand years ago when the first tribes made their way out of Africa. Records do not show who actually settled first, but through the studies of Roman mythology the first people who settled there would be the "sea people" (named after the Egyptians crushed their naval army at sea).

While many scattered across the United States in the hope of gaining the dream of land in the New World many felt comfortable in New York City where many of their countrymen had settled. This trend was created because of language familiarity and the influence of Catholicism. The first Little Italy was created in what came to be known as Italian Harlem which today has become Spanish Harlem. The shrinking Little Italy in NYC today is in lower Manhattan which is seeing increased encroachment from Chinatown and other Asian country populations.

The former northern influence of Italians around Houston Street has become known as NoLita for North of Little Italy. Modern Little Italy still exists with dozens of restaurants catering to the tourists and an eleven day Italian Festival honors the Feast of San Gennaro.

There are small enclaves like Little Italy of the Bronx and Staten Island holds many of the Italian American community but the Mulberry Street of yesteryear is gone as Italians have assimilated fully into American society and those who had roots there can now be found in Denver, Dallas and Des Moines.
