The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints was established by Joseph Smith on April 6 1830. Members of this church believe Joseph Smith was a prophet of God, and that there is a living prophet on earth today. It is the 4th largest christian church in America. Often referred to as the Mormon Church.

There have been a few splinter groups from the LDS church. The first and largest was the RLDS church, which has since melded into the community of christ for financial reasons, and has renounced the prophet-hood of Joseph Smith.

There is also the polygamist group lead by Warren Jeffs that was recently in the news. This group beleives in the Book of Mormon, but is unaffiliated with the LDS church.

It's not called a Mormon colony. But the Mormon church started in Palmyra, New York in the 1830s.

And it was not "His Mormon colony" The church is called "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints" Thus it is Jesus Christ's church.

The LDS Church was organized on April, 1830 at Fayette, New York by Joseph Smith.

The Prophet Joseph Smith was murdered at Carthage jail near Nauvoo, Illinois, June 27, 1844.

Therefore Joseph Smith led the Mormons from New York to Ohio, to Missouri and finally to Illinois.

Joseph Smith and his followers began their church in upstate New York and had no intention of moving until a large group converted in Kirtland, Ohio. The group was so large it was decided that it would be best to relocate and join with them.

While in Kirtland, Joseph Smith recieved a revelation that Zion, the home of the Saints of God, would be located near Independence, Missouri. A group was sent there to establish a settlement. However, the persecution was so bad in Ohio and in Missouri, that the Mormons were forced to move to Illinois. They founded the city of Nauvoo on the western border, and lived there for several years. The persecution grew bad here too, and a mob shot and killed Joseph Smith. The government asked the Mormons to leave.

Most of the Mormons followed Brigham Young to Salt Lake City, where they have been headquartered since 1847. Those who remained split, some staying in Illinois, some moving back to Missouri, and others going to different states.

To this day, many Mormons believe that the area near Independence, Missouri is Zion, their rightful home, and that it will be restored them at the time of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.

After the lynching of Mormon leaders where did the new Mormon leaders decide to settle the Mormon followers?

After Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum were murdered in Carthage, Illinois, Brigham Young and other members of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles lead a group of followers to what is now Salt Lake City, Utah. Joseph Smith told the Church members before his death that they would eventually move to the Rocky Mountains, and so they did. Other members stayed in Illinois for a time and then moved to Missouri under the direction of Joseph Smith's son, Joseph Smith III. Who is Joseph smith from the 1840s?

Joseph Smith, Jr (1805-1843) is the founder of the Mormonism movement. He is viewed as a modern prophet by his followers, who believe that Jesus Christ personally appeared to Joseph and directed him in proper Christian doctrine and organization. His father (Joseph Smith, Sr.) and son (Joseph Smith III) also lived during the 1840's and were influential within the Mormonism movement - Joseph Smith Sr (1771-1840) was the Presiding Patriarch of the Church and a great supporter and believer of his son's teachings. Joseph Smith III (1832-1914) was the appointed leader of a group who split from the main body of the church at the death of Joseph, preferring religious authority to be passed down the family line rather than to senior Apostle Brigham Young.
