The Romans mostly had a diet of starchy foods such as bread and pasta. Conquest brought Egypt under Rome's control and the Egyptians became the source of Rome's grain. This also explains the close, sometimes shaky, relationship between Rome and the Egyptian Provence.

The Romans grew their food or imported it from around the Roman Empire and beyond. Rome imported vast amounts of grain to feed its massive population Half of it came from Egypt Tunisia, Sicily and Sardinia were other major producers. Rome also imported massive quantities of olive oil (the storage of discarded fragments of olive oil amphorae created an artificial hill). Much of it came from Spain because their olive oil was cheaper than the Italian one. Wine and grapes were produced in Italy and also imported from around the Mediterranean. Other foodstuff was also imported from around the empire and even from Arabia, Persia and India.

They either grew it themselves or bought it from farmers who cultivated the land and raised animals.

Some would also hunt, fish and gather edible plants from the countryside.
