It comes from French carton and Italian cartone=strong, heavy paper, pasteboard, thus "preliminary sketches made by artists on such paper," augmentive of Latin carta= paper, whose origin is the Greek χάρτης (in ancient Gr. pronounced as khartes).

This question doesn't have a single answer, because cartoon has more than one meaning.

  1. A preliminary drawing, always monochrome, of an intended painting. It's the same idea as an engineer's sketch of something he intends to build, but usually of good enough quality to be beautiful, and desirable in its own right.
  2. A drawing, always distorted but still recognisable, of a well known person, place or thing. Usually accompanied by captions, labels and/or speech bubbles, it can be described as one or more of : funny, satirical, critical, political, vicious.
  3. (Abbreviation of "strip cartoon") A short series of small, simple pictures telling a story. Usually humorous, often satirical.
  4. (Abbreviation of "animated cartoon") A movie made of many drawings, each slightly different from its predecessor.
  • 1. above is almost certainly several thousand years old, but the origin is uncertain.
  • 2 and 3 need help from a specialist historian. I suspect 17th Century Europe.
  • 4 seems to have originated in 19th Century England, where stick figures were drawn on a series of small cards, with each figure slightly different. When the cards were 'riffled' with finger and thumb the little man was seen to walk, smile, wave, etc. The idea was picked up by Hollywood in the 20th Century.

The word "cartoon" came from the Italian word cartone and Dutch/Flemish word "karton", meaning strong, heavy paper or pasteboard. Because many illustrations were made as a full-size drawing on paper as a study for further drawings, such as paintings or tapestries, they chose the name "cartoon".

Because of the stylistic similarities between comic strips and early animated movies, "cartoon" came to refer to animation, and this is the sense in which "cartoon" is most commonly used today.
