The chili is a new world plant. When Columbus arrived in the new world, he thought he was in china and sought out spices (especially black pepper) the closest he could find was crushed dried chili (which came to be called "red pepper"). This resulted in chilies being called "chili peppers". From there chilies spread throughout the old world.
