Tom Monaghan and his brother, James, originally purchased "DomiNick's," a Pizza store in Ypsilanti, Mich. with a bank loan of $500 to buy the store and a VW Beetle as a delivery car.

A year later they parted ways, James taking the Beetle, and Tom continued the business taking on another short-term partner and expanding to 3 stores over the next few years. When that partnership ended in 1965 he decided to change the name to Domino's Pizza Inc - which was a suggestion of one of his drivers.

FYI - the 3 dots on the domino logo represent the 3 stores that Tom owned at the time; 2 in Ypsilanti and 1 in Ann Arbor.

It was originally DomiNick's Pizza. The Monaghan brothers bought DomiNick's for a pittance in 1960. After Tom bought out brother James, he renamed it Domino's. The rest is history.
