People lived in homes that they only built for themselves and for their family some people were lucky enough to keep their homes and there jobs to keep food on the table for their spouses and children.
The largest movement of people was out of the farmlands of the middle part of the country and into California. Many people also went to the large cities of the East and Midwest in search of work.
They really didn't have anywhere to go other than the streets. People lost their homes and just about everything they owned.
Many lived in their homes, some lived on the street, and some lived in shelters or cars.
They migrated to places where there was better opportunity for jobs, like west to California, for instance.
Hoovervilles were shanty towns that people were forced to live in because they could not afford any proper accomodation during the Great Depression. They were named after President Hoover who was President of the US at the beginning of the Great Depression. Hoover was replaced by Franklin D Roosevelt because he was regarded as a 'do nothing President' meaning he did not put proper measures in place to help the USA out of the Great Depression.

Education was horrible in the great depression. Unlsess you call learning to survive on your own education. Many schools actually closed during the great depression. Most children couldn't even afford to go to school, or didn't even get a chance to go. So many children and youths were uneducated and unemployed, this was the main reason the NYA (national youth adminsitration) was created.
