The first 'Pizza' was referred to in Gaeta in Italy in the 16th century, though it was a simple street dish and not of any significance. It was certainly not served at high tables. Sauce was applied to the bread, though not as we imagine today, as tomatoes were not brought from the Americas until the 17th century.
