The Angel Falls got its name after the American pilot, Jimmie Angel. He discovered the falls after flying over them in 1935. In 1937, Jimmie angel returned and landed on top of the falls, on 'The Devil's Mountain.' the ground was swampy, and he was unable to takeoff. Being stuck at the top of the waterfall, he hiked down for 11 days before finding civilization.

Although a Venezuelan ground expedition may have seen the Falls in 1912, they were first publicized in 1933 when US aviator Jimmie Angel (1899-1956) flew over the region around Angel Falls. In 1937, he and three others had to hike back to civilization after a rough landing on the plateau.

*There is a smaller waterfall with the same name in the state of Maine, where the name was suggested by the angel-like image often formed by spray from the cascading falls.
