If the Flood really covered the top of Mount Ararat, a five kilometre high extinct volcano, then the flood waters must have covered the entire world. This of course raises the question of where so much water came from and where it went after the Flood.

Recent research indicates that the major 'flood' event that started the folk legends of a great flood occurred in what is now the Black Sea, around 5600 BCE. At this stage, there was a small fresh-water lake surrounded by fertile farmland, cut off from the Mediterranean Sea by a land bridge where the Bosporus now is. After the end of the Ice Ages, the rising ocean levels separated the British Isles from the European mainland. As they continued to rise, the Bosporus land bridge was breached, sending in a massive torrent of water that could probably be heard many kilometres away. This awesome event must have seemed as if the gods had wanted to destroy mankind.

According to The Bible, the Flood covered the whole world. Certainly, it would not be possible for waters to cover Mount Ararat without covering the whole world - assuming that there is somehow enough water to achieve this. On the other hand, Egypt and other ancient civilisations continued right through the period attributed to the Flood, blissfully unaware of its existence. If there was a great Flood, it must have been a localised event.

Ian Wilson (Before the Flood) has amassed considerable evidence that the story of Noah's Flood, in common with a number of even more ancient flood stories from the Near East and elsewhere, is probably a folk memory of the natural flooding of the Black Sea. This low-lying region had been a fertile plain until the Mediterranean Sea broke through the Bosphorus, although not in 3000 BCE but actually 5200 BCE. The prevailing consensus of scientists is that between 14,000, when the last Ice Age came to an end, and 5000 BCE the world's sea-levels rose by no less than 120 to 130 metres. This sea level rise resulted in the British Isles being cut off from the European mainland, the Bering Strait being opened, and the Mediterranean Sea broke through the Bosphorus. It is this last event that probably brought about the story of the Flood.

What is the story of noah and the flood?

A:The Epic of Gilgamesh and the biblical story of Noah's Flood are remarkably similar, with similar stories of birds being released, and even ending with a sacrifice on an altar and the invention of viticulture.Scientists say there never was a great world-wide flood as described in the Bible. Ian Wilson (Before the Flood) believes that these stories and a number of related Near Eastern legends were really folk memories of the inundation of what is now the Black Sea around 5600 BCE, after the last Ice Age.

What archaeologist discovered evidence of a great flood?

The great flood that likely led to the Near Eastern flood myths such as the biblical flood of Noah's Ark and the great flood of the Epic of Gilgamesh, is believed to be the inundation of the low-lying, fertile plains that became the Black Sea when the Mediterranean Sea breached the Bosporus in approximately 5600 BCE.No one archaeologist can be given full credit for this discovery, because clues accumulated until various scientists began to take the Black Sea seriously as the origin of the biblical Flood story. They include Rick Fairbanks, Mellaart, David Ross, Egon Degen, Bob Karlin and a joint Russian-American expedition.

Why can we not be sure of the size of the Noah's Ark?

A:The Bible gives the size of Noah's Ark as 300 cubits (507 feet) long, by 50 cubits (85 feet) wide and 30 cubits (about 50 feet) high. On the face of it, that would be about as definite as it is possible to get. It should enable us to be absolutely sure of the size of Noah's Ark, as long as the Bible itself is historically true and accurate. The Book of Genesis does leave clues that the story is no more than a legend. Noah had his first child when he was 500 years old and the flood came when he was just 600 years old.At Genesis 6:19-20, Noah is told to take two of every animal onto the Ark, clean or unclean, but in Genesis 7:1 he is told to take two of every unclean animal, but seven of every clean animal. In one place the story has the flood subsiding in just forty days, while in another that it lasted one year.Another problem arises when science tells us that there never was a world-wide flood as described in the Bible. Even if there was a flood in Noah's time the Bible is not sure of the details, and this uncertainty must include the construction of the Ark, but science says there was no flood. With no flood, there is no reason to believe that Noah (if there was such a person) ever built an Ark. The biblical size then becomes meaningless.
