What is Speckle Park?

Speckle Park is a breed of beef cattle that originated from Saskatchewan, Canada.

When did Speckle Park cattle become a breed?

In 1959, Eilleen and Bill Lamont of Maidstone, Saskatchewan, bought their first speckled heifer from Mary Lindsay of Greenstreet, Saskatchewan. The subsequent offspring from this heifer caught their interest and they decided to attempt to create a new breed. In 1985, nine Speckle Park breeders met to form The Speckle Park Breeders Association; the name was later changed to the Canadian Speckle Park Association. In 1993, Agriculture Canada granted the approval to the association for a developing breed under the Canadian Animal Pedigree Act. Then on July 6, 2006 the Speckle Park breed was named it's own distinct breed of purebred cattle.

How did the Speckle Park breed originate?

It all started with a red roan heifer that became a cow that gave birth to a calf with the same colour pattern no matter what breed of bull she was bred to. Mary Lindsay of Greenstreet, Saskatchewan, had spotted this red roan heifer in her father's herd and decided to buy her and breed her to see what offspring she produced.Bill and Eillen Lamont of Maidstone Saskatchewan thought that the speckled cattle would go well with their Angus herd and Appaloosa horses they were already currently raising on their ranch. They bought their first speckled heifer from Mary in 1959 and began crossing her with the Angus bulls they had in their herd. Of course, the thoughts of creating the breed came later, as they observed the interesting colour patterns that came from breeding their speckled cows with their Angus bulls. As this interest grew, they decided to create a breed, thus named Speckle Park. From the Canadian Speckle Park Association website on Breed History (link posted below):"Interest in the cattle grew, not only with cattlemen but also the press. A trio of Speckle Park steers made the trip to the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto in 1972. They were featured in Case International Publications under a section on 'Minority Breeds in Canada.' Around 1983 Lloyd Pickard, a cattle promoter and Angus breeder from Alberta, included a few pages about the Speckle Park in his book '100 Years of Angus in Canada.'"In 1985 Speckle Park breeders representing nine different herds met to form The Speckle Park Breeders Association. The Association was subsequently renamed The Canadian Speckle Park Association."In 1993 Agriculture Canada granted approval for the Canadian Speckle Park Association to become incorporated under the terms of the Canadian Animal Pedigree Act for the purpose developing Speckle Park cattle as an evolving breed. On Feb. 14, 1995, ministerial approval was granted for the Canadian Speckle Park Association's first set of by-laws."On July 6, 2006, the Canadian Speckle Park Association's Articles of Incorporation were amended to the effect that Speckle Park became a distinct breed of purebred cattle according to the terms of the Canadian Animal Pedigree Act. A few days later the carcass of another Speckle Park steer was awarded the championship at a major all-breed carcass competition in Calgary, Alberta."

Why and how was the Speckle Park breed created?

The Speckle Park breed originated from a red roan heifer that threw calves of the same color pattern no matter what bull she was bred to. It is supposed that this cow (then owned by Mary Lindsay) is descended from the Teeswater Shorthorn and sired by a bull with the White Park colouration. The offspring of this cow caught the attention of Bill and Eillen Lamont, and subsequently were bought and bred to Angus bulls. The resulting calves varied in colour patterns from white with black points to leopard to black sided with speckled hips, white top and underline and roan faces. The Lamonts took interest in the colour patterns of these calves and decided to start the Speckle Park breed. So as to "why" Speckle Park was created, it is more about the colouration, but it was also because this breed excelled in terms of maternity and calving ability, excellent gains on grass, and a very quiet nature, among other things.
