The greatest battles of WWII in Europe/Asia were fought in the Soviet Union. The German Army was so badly beaten by the Soviets that only a token force of the German Army remained to face the Normandy Invasion of 1944.
The question of what was the decisive battle of the war is a difficult one to answer. There were many major battles, and depending on who you talk to, any of them could be it. Some examples would be Kurks, Leningrad, Stalingrad, and Normandy.
My understanding is that most often, and I agree with the assertion, is that Stalingrad is seen as probably the most important decisive battle of the European war. In the Pacific war, it was probably Midway, although there are many candidates.
The Soviets crushed the Germans at Stalingrad in a long, brutal urban battle; in so doing, they wiped out a major German army plus the armies of some of Germany's smaller allies. While Germany would occasionally launch some offensive operations (such as Operations Citadel and Wacht am Rhein), for the rest of the war Germany was on the defensive and the Soviet Union was on the offensive.
