Historians tended to think that ancient Egypt was the site of cat domestication because of the cats in the paintings about 3,600 years old. But in 2004, a Neolithic grave was excavated in Shillourokambos, Cyprus, that contained the skeletons, laid close to one another, of both a human and a cat. The grave is estimated to be 9,500 years old. The cat specimen is large and closely resembles the African wildcat, rather than house cats. The discovery, combined with genetic studies, suggest that cats were probably domesticated in the Near East, in the Fertile Crescent, around the time of the development of agriculture. Then they were brought to Cyprus and Egypt. Hope this helps.
I don't think anyone can really answer that because both cat and dog came from the same ancestor called the Miacis, which dates back 40-50 million years ago. The cat's best know historic ancestor is the Sabretooth Tiger.
According to this website, it indicates that humans and cats became associated towards the end of the Stone age, but it took many centuries before the cat became domesticated. It was mentioned that it was likely in Egypt that the cat became domestic about 5000 years ago. It is believed that it was in Egypt where many of cat breeds today evolved from.
There has been much debate over the origins of the domestic cat over the last century or so. It is most likely that the African wildcat (Felis silvestris lybica), is the ancestor of the modern domestic cat. This species is found mostly in the deserts of Israel, Saudi Arabia, and other Middle Eastern countries and is thought that some individuals started living in close proximity to humans around ten to twelve thousand years ago.
These formerly wild felines became household companions, and the same cat species appear to have accompanied human tribes as they gradually migrated and spread throughout the world.
I don't know where they originally come from ( I'm not sure if anyone does) but I think the first people to keep them as pets were the Egyptians, so they probably bred them first. (It's like no-one knows where we are originally from so they probably don't know where cats come from.)
