It took some time for word to get out, however, and people who heard about it were likely to look for gold rather than telling anyone else, so word did not spread as rapidly as one might imagine. It took nearly a year, until July of 1897, for word to become widespread in the United States. The Gold Rush began during that time, but there is no precise date for its beginning.
