In plants, this process involves the mitochondria breaking down and recombining thesugar and oxygen created during photosynthesis. This recombination oxidizes the sugar, chemically burning it and releasing the energy. In plants, cellular respiration requires six oxygen molecules and one sugar molecule to create six water molecules, six carbon dioxide molecules and 36 units of ATP. The carbon dioxide and water can then be recycled to repeat this process.
