The Amish are different from us because they live simply while we don't live simply.

The Last average estimated I heard, was are around 300,000 members and growing. But because of centuries of intermarrying, there is the compounding factor of genetic diseases, which some theorize will cause a collapse of Amish people in near generations to come.

I live in the midst of Amish country in the Lancaster, PA area. The farm across the road from us is Amish and we talk to them almost weekly. Also had work done by Amish contractors. We find them totally non-judgemental and we respect their way of life as do most of us "English" people in this area. To tourists the Amish or Mennonites may look odd, because they dress different, but the local people don't notice.

No US president has been Amish. I do not know about their church government, but if they elect presidents., they must have had more than one by now.

John Cook did, in the movie "Witness." The Amish are no different that the rest of us. Some are generous to a fault, and some not. While you might find Amish willing to have you live with them, one would have to wonder why you'd want to. The have a strong religious belief that living apart us important to keep from losing their faith. If you introduce English attitudes and ways into the family, you would tend to cause discontent and turmoil that might tend to break the family apart.

Pretty much all 303,591,568 of us. (yes, even the Amish and the homeless use electricity). the percentage of people that use electricity is 97%! :D that also, means that only 3% don't use electricity. :(
Do Amish people get to see the world?
Yes, if they have the time and money. I know an Amish couple in their late 50's from Penn. that have been to Europe on vacation and have traveled a good bit in the US.
