Some ducks fly south in the winter, but the majority of ducks congregate in large ponds right before the ice freezes. They have a special nerve that tells them when the water reaches a temperature of approximately 37 degrees Fahrenheit. When ducks receive this sensor, they immediately go to the aforementioned pond. Duck "families" return to the same pond, generation after generation.

One of such ponds is located in Central Park, in New York City. City workers have used various methods to remove the ducks from the ice, as they are seen as an eyesore, and they are a large inconvenience to the thousands of ice skaters in that part of the city. Workers began by using a large razor blade to slice the ducks from their frozen-in feet. This created a flat plane for skaters, but it made the ice extremely bloody and hence an undesirable place to be, and as a matter fact, in a horrible condition for skating, as the tops of duck feet are not slippery. Recently, city workers have resorted to covering the ice right before it freezes. This is only necessary on heavily used skating ponds, like that in Central Park, and on many remote ponds one would find plenty of ducks weathering the winter, with feet frozen into the ice.

Holden thinks about ducks in Central Park because they symbolize his feelings of displacement and uncertainty about his future. What do the ducks in catcher in the rye mean?

In "The Catcher in the Rye," the ducks in the Central Park lagoon serve as a metaphor for Holden Caulfield's feelings of alienation and uncertainty about the future. The ducks disappear in the winter and return in the spring, mirroring Holden's own desire to find a sense of belonging and purpose in his life. Their mysterious migration symbolizes Holden's search for meaning and connection in a world that often seems chaotic and confusing.

What question did Holden ask the cab driver when they were driving to New York City?

He asks him where he thinks the ducks in the pond at the southeast corner of Central Park go in the winter. Which is moronic, since presumably they fly south like all the rest of the ducks in North America do in the winter. Not only that, but there are several ponds in Central Park, and they all have ducks in them. As a lifelong New Yorker, Holden must know that. So why on earth he cares only about the ducks in that particular pond is beyond my understanding.

Where do white maillard ducks go for winter?

How has the pond in Central Park been seen as a metaphor for Holden's feelings about life and death?

Holden continuously brought up the ducks in the pond throughout the entire book for a reason. In a way, the ducks symbolizes him. The duck has potential in life and is able to reach far and able to defeat obstacles. Holden realizes this and feels as if he should follow the ducks and their paths to another area during the winter when the pond freezes up. There was this specific scene where Holden repetitively brings up the ducks and asks the cab driver his opinion of where the ducks go during the winter. The cab driver becomes infuriated and asks if the fish is all right in the pond. The reason why he asks about the fish is because he symbolizes the fish, stuck at the pond forever with no chance of escaping.

Do ducks fly long distances?

Yes. Some species of ducks in North America fly all the way from Canada where they are born in the spring down to Mexico where they stay for the winter. Then they fly back again to mate and have their own ducklings.
