In the first January 1502, portuguese sailors, saw a nice Bay. Believing that was the end of a big river, they gave the name RIO that means river in Portugues, and Janeiro that is January also in Portuguese. The city was founded in 1565 by Estacio de Sa, with the name, Sao Sebastiao do Rio de Janeiro , in honor of Dom Sebastiao, King of Portugal.
