∙ 13y agoThe term Achilles heel refers to a person's weak spot. It comes from the Greek hero Achilles. Thetis, Achilles's mother is a nymph. When Achilles was born, she tried to dip him in the river Styx to make him immortal. But she missed Achilles' heel because she was holding him by it. Another version of the story is that she anointed Achilles with ambrosia and tried to burn away his mortal parts. When Peleus, Achilles's father, interrupted her, the only part of Achilles that was still mortal was his heel. Achilles's death was caused by his heel. In the Trojan war, Paris knew that Achilles is pretty much invincible. So he shot a poision arrow into the Achilles's heel and that killed Achilles. This is why we refer to a person's weak spot as an Achilles heel.
