Rivers often form a steep mountain slopes. Near its sourcem a river is often a fast flowing and generally follows a straight, narrow course. The steep slopes along the river erode rapidly. The result is a deep, V-shaped valley. from-Lil'lexoo! =]

A mountain stream will often flow quickly as the gradient is steep. Lower down in the valley, the gradient is level and the width between the river banks is greater, so accommodating the greater volume of water. The speed of flow is therefore naturally reduced as the steepness of the gradient lessens.

Where is the speed of the flowing water in a river the slowest Explain-?

These are some things that cause the speed of water to slow down. Broad flat channels slow a river down, a rough channel will also slow the water down. Basically, anything that increases the surface area of a body of water, against which water flows will slow it down, this is due to the increase of friction. In addition, water flows slowest at the margins of a river, if the river is winding, water will flow slower at the inside curves.
