Best Answer

The original Order of Illuminati was organized in 1776 in Bavaria to bring together a group of enlightened thinkers. The founder was Johann Adam Weishaupt, a German philosopher and a professor at the University of Ingolstadt. Originally Weishaupt had planned the order to be named the "Perfectibilists". He recruited other intellectuals of the period who were dissatisfied with the royal government whom they considered despots.

In 1785, Duke Charles Theodore, ruler of Bavaria, outlawed secret organizations, which disbanded the Illuminati. Any group claiming that name or anyone claiming to 'know' about a group or its members today is either gullible or selling magazines, books, or movies (or 'hits' on their website to show numbers to advertisers).
