"Raw" rapeseed oil is high in erucic acid, a known carcinogen, and must be processesd to reduce the erucic acid content. This cooking oil was originally marketed as Lear Oil, low-Erucic Acid Rapeseed Oil, but later was named Canola oil when marketed to the United States. One of the best selling oils in the US at the time was Mazola Corn oil. So Can(ada) (Maz)ola became the marketing brand.
