The gulf anoxic zone moves around depending on the season and conditions but is typically found in the deeper waters off the Mississippi delta along the Texas and Louisiana coasts. The average recorded size of the zone since 1980s is nearly 20,000 square kilometers (~8,000 square miles). The zone is typically defined by low dissolved oxygen zones (O2 < 2mg/l) which can not support most forms of aquatic life.

When I studied this in college, they showed me a much larger zone area that stretched over the half way to cuba and the yucatan. It could be this is the historical range of where the zone has been located at various times. The zone moves around based on currents and can be broken up by large storms. If you want to learn more, I suggest reviewing the information available from NOAA at the following site.
