It used to be Omaha, which at the time was relatively small, so the Nebraska Government considered moving it closer to the population center of the State, and eventually decided to move it to the small village of Lancaster in 1867. Omaha businessmen and politicians tried to derail this by having the village renamed "Lincoln", after the recently assassinated President (Nebraska had been home to many Confederate sympathisers). The move did not work, as the settlement was renamed Lincoln and the government moved to it.
