The Plasma Membrane encases the cell and all of the organelles within it, it regulates what goes in and out of the cell. It also protects it from harmful objects i.e. viruses, harmful chemicals, from entering the cell and possibly destroying it from within.

The plasma membrane is also known as the cell surface membrane because it occurs at the surface of the cell ie it encloses the cytoplasm and separates it from the surroundings of the cell.

In a plant cell the plasma membrane is between the cytoplasm and the cell wall, and is usually pressed up against the wall.
