Thr first capitol was the 'territorial' capitol at St. Stephens, located in southwest Alabama. When Alabama became a state(1819) the capitol 'provisional" (temporary--required for statehood), located at Huntsville,(extreme North section). The following year is was established at Cahawba (1820-1826). It experienced several floods, causing the capitol to be relocated to Tuscaloosa (home of Alabama University) , where it stayed for 26 years (1826-1846). Its relocation to the current--hopefully, final-- is at Montgomery (1846-present site). The current capitol burned-down in 1849, and was re-built in 1851. A humorous comment attribued to its many capitols: " A state with capitol on wheels".
